Video challenges to get you off your ass and out in the real world practising your skills and filming something real, something brave, something to show off.The DV Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12954943276472229197noreply@blogger.comBlogger20125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15197980.post-5327594983859970282007-12-21T22:28:00.000-08:002007-12-21T22:35:29.099-08:00JudgingIf you enter a film...

YOU ARE A JUDGE!

Juding is really very easy, once the challenge is complete and all films have been released, you usually have until the end of the following Sunday night to pick your top three films, and email them as #1 #2 and #3 to thedvchallenge@gmail.com

Please include both the filmmakers name and the film title when you send them in!

One vote per film/team. And no voting for your own film!
If you didn't enter, you don't get to vote!

And on what criteria do you pick your top three films?

Voting should be weighted 50% for production quality, and 50% for use of theme/story.

Here is a system that might help.
Give each film two ratings out of 10. One for how well it uses the theme, one for overall production value. Write them down in order as you watch and readjust as you see fit.

For example:
________Theme/Story ______ Production
Film A________9_____________ 9.5
Film B________8______________9
Film C________7______________7
Film D________5______________7
Film E________8______________3

By the end you will have a list that represents fairly accurately your best choices, and no films get forgotten. You may want to go back and rewatch your top 5 just to make sure they are as good as you remember them.

Have fun!The DV Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12954943276472229197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15197980.post-73060643486530181862007-11-05T08:26:00.000-08:002007-11-05T08:45:35.063-08:00The DV Challenge #10 - FinalistsTheme: "Scare Us"

Guys and gals, it's been my pleasure to run DVC10, the first horror themed DV Challenge. Thanks to everyone who submitted a film, they were all fun to watch!

And now it's wrapped up. The votes are in. The winner is chosen. A $250 shopping spree provided by our sponsor Guy Cochran at www.dvestore.com is ready to go to the new champ. Thanks Guy. It sure makes it more fun when there's something to battle for!
And of course thanks to Chris Hurd and the rest of DVinfo.net for being the best damn video forum on the internet.

And thanks to everyone who submitted a film, you are all winners simply for the fact that you got up and did it. It makes a big difference for judging where we watch each film at least a few times.

Unacceptible:Those stupid free download sites where you have to wait 30 seconds and skip through three layers of advertising before playing it. This weekend, we'll all make a short film, say 3 minutes long, just for fun."

There were no crazy rules, no strange hoops to jump through, just a one word theme, and a common motivation for everyone to get off their collective asses and get out doing what they love, making films.

And thus it began with five films, as a simple challenge amongst friends.

Several years later, The DV Challenge is still run from its home at DVinfo.net, except now there are usually 50-100 people signing up for every contest, 30-40 completed entries, thousands of viewers at home, tens of thousands on Youtube, and all for free.

So what is the future of The DV Challenge?
It is a contest of the people, for the people.
The future will be what we make it.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part in it and been involved along the way!The DV Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12954943276472229197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15197980.post-27994514670888914822007-09-11T23:58:00.000-07:002007-09-12T00:13:15.959-07:00The DV Challenge #9Here we go again!
In my opinion, everyone who submits a film is a finalist. The challenge is to get a movie finished in about 10 days, so just getting it done is a victory in it's own. Let's face it, talk is cheap and signing up is free, so actually going through with it is the big step, regardless of who wins. So here's to you guys and gals!

The DV Challenge #9 Prize! Don't forget, you don't just win glory, you win GEAR! GOOD GEAR!A huge thanks to Guy Cochran at www.dvestore.com for putting up another killer prize...A Bogen 561B fluid head monopod.

And is NOT eligible to win, so although I know you'd all give it first place, you simply can't vote for it... sorry.
Dylan Couper
"Is it love?"
WARNING: Contains multiple "f-words" and DV Challenge #5 - FinalistsWow, a year after our first DVC we have just wrapped up the biggest challenge yet. 31 completed entries is a pretty impressive number, and I'm proud to be a part of this with all the rest of you.

Just submitting a film is like winning. Talk is cheap and everyone and their uncle are filmmakers these days, so when you actually get something up on screen you are one huge step ahead of everyone else. So here's to you guys and girls!

Next, a big thanks to Guy Cochran at www.dvestore.com for putting up a VIDEO IPOD as a prize! Guy has been with us for a long time and while I still haven't figured out a way to enter and win my own competition, he keeps tempting me to do so with great prizes.

And of course to our own Mike Teutsch who has donated one of his custom made video dollies as a prize. A prize any filmmaker can use!

Also big thanks to Mark Aardsma of ATS Acoustics, a manufacturer of acoustic panels for studios, control rooms, home theater, etc. who has donated a $150 gift certificate to their online store, www.atsacoustics.com

Then there is a big personal thanks to everyone who has donated cash, bought t-shirts (new ones on sale now!) or volunteered in any other way. It is always appreciated!

One personal big thanks to Rob Lohman who has been a huge help both with running the DVC5 as it expanded. Rob, you rock!

And finally to Chris Hurd for giving us a home here on DVinfo.net, the best darn video forum out there!

Ok, now on to the part you really care about... Who won the darn thing?
Well, there were some really fantastic entries. However, there was a pretty even consensus as to the winner... but first the finalists.

There was a massive near tie of top films, so instead of posting a Runner Up, I will post in no particular order:

THE FINAL FIVE:
Michael Fossenkemper - TheWrongTurn
Robert Kirkpatrick - The Autumn Queen
Bill Gardner - Love Bites
Steve Shilson - Tracks of Reality
BradleyMarlow - INTROSPECTACLE

Congrats guys, these five were great!
And yet.... there can be only one champ...
AND THE WINNER OF THE DV CHALLENGE #5 IS:

BILL GARDNER - LOVE BITES

Three cheers for Bill, fantastic entry!

Thanks you all and I hope to see you all back for DVC6!

And now...
The films!
Day 1

Bill Gardner
Love Bites
Good quality: ~58 Mbytes, 480x360, 24p
http://www.wrgardner.com/LoveBitesHiBW.wmv or http://dsp.ucsd.edu/~wgardner/LoveBitesHiBW.wmv
Fair quality: ~20 Mbytes, 320x240, 12p
http://www.wrgardner.com/LoveBitesLoBW.wmv or http://dsp.ucsd.edu/~wgardner/LoveBitesLoBW.wmv

Steve Shilson
Tracks of Reality
Windows Media Player Verison (31.7mb)
http://www.steveshilson.com/TracksofReality.wmv
Quicktime HI (34.4mb)
http://www.steveshilson.com/TracksofRealityQT.mov
Quicktime LOW (12.8mb)
http://www.steveshilson.com/TracksofRealityQTLOW.mov

Bradley L. I must thank Chris Hurd for letting us run this here, as well as running the best damn video forum out there.

Next, a big thanks to Guy Cochran and http://www.dvestore.com/ for providing some excellent prizes for the winners.

After that, I've got to thank DVinfo moderators Michael Wisniewski, Ed Smith, and Rob Lohman who rounded out the judging with Guy Cochran and myself. Judging this one was tough, and these guys put a lot of work in their decisions. Also a second round of thanks to Rob Lohman for helping out with web rendering questions.

And since all you participants have thanked me at one time or another, via email or the forum, I'd just like to say, you are all welcome! It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun, and it also got me off my own butt to shoot something.

And finally, thanks to all of you for entering. If it wasn't for you all....judging would be a lot faster! One of the hardest things about making short films is actually getting up off your butt and doing it. This contest is designed to do just that.

It works like this:

First, log on to our host forum http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/ It is free! You will need to do this so you can access the SIGN UP thread in our forum, found at: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/forumdisplay.php?f=100.

This allows you quick access to help from the thousands of forum members on DVinfo.net, should you need it. It will also allow you to post a thread dedicated to your movie, so that viewers can give you direct feedback about it and you can share your filming experiences. It is totally free to sign up! If you want to support The DV Challenge, click out support thread link on the left.

Once you post in the sign up thread your intention on competing on DVinfo.net, you should do a little pre-production, gather a few actors, a choice of locations, and some help.

From there all you need to do is wait for the contest theme to be announced on the starting day (usually a Thursday morning PST). Once the theme is posted, you will have until the following Sunday night, 10 days later, to write and shoot a story revolving around it. Generally, you should write your script on the Thursday, and shoot over the weekend.

From there you can take the following week to do any re-shoots, and all your editing. That is if you like doing things the easy way!

From there, upload it to http://www.youtube.com/, adding a title that says "thedvchallenge.com presents" and list it with our Youtube account (TheDVChallenge)

You are welcome to host a high quality version on your own webspace, and submit both.

Once your film is online, email the link to your movie to thedvchallenge@gmail.com before the Sunday at midnight deadline. The sooner you get it in the better. Please include your name and title in the email subject line, and the following information in the body of the email formatted exactly like this:

Your Name
"Title Of Your Movie"
http://www.theyoutubelink.here/

After all the films have been submitted, we post 4 or 5 a day the following week for all to watch.
Do not post your link anywhere else until we have screened it on the forum the following week.
After all the films have "screened" on our DVinfo.net forum, this site, and our newsletter, then the judging begins. Anyone who submits a film is a judge! Part of competing is judging. Watch all your competitors films, and email your top 3 choices, in order of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, to thedvchallenge@gmail.com before the Sunday night following the screening. The winners are usually announced Monday morning. You ARE allowed to use part of the additional 20 seconds for your film if you need it. There is no penalty for films shorter than 3 minutes, so you can enter with a 40 second film if you like.

Your film must open with a title reading "thedvchallenge.com presents" Please note the URL is "thedvchallenge.com" and not "dvchallenge.com" You may use any font, in order to make it congruent with the look and feel of your film.

All good stories need a good title! Your film must have a title which must show at the beginning of your film following "thedvchallenge.com presents"! Whenever you email us, please include the title. It makes life so much easier.
Please, do not make the title the same or similar to the theme. If the theme is “cats”, don’t call your movie “Cats”, “The Cats”, or “A Cat”.
Very descriptive titles are good as it helps your film stick out in the judges minds when trying to remember which film is which. Films titled “untitled” will be frowned upon.

WEB VERSIONS
You are entirely responsible for putting your film up on the web. If your film is not available for all to see at the scheduled time, it is not our responsibility and you are out of judging.

We strongly request that one version of the film you submit be on Youtube, for quick and repeated viewing, as well as long term archiving so that people will be able to watch it for a long time after the challenge is over.

You are welcome to host your own high resolution version of your film for people who prefer to watch a higher quality version.

We will post up to a total of three versions so the audience has several viewing options.

Please do not post links to your film publicly before we officially release it in the week following the deadline. After the deadline, we encourage you to promote it as much as you can.

DEADLINE
When the theme is announced on a Thursday, the deadline is 11:59:59 PM Pacific Time the following Sunday night (10 days later). We often grant a few extra hours of leeway to those who submit it late into Sunday night, as long as the link is in our inbox by Monday morning.

CONTENT
YOUR FILM MUST BE ALL YOUR OWN MATERIAL, or you must have legal right to use it, such as copyright free music or properly licensed music. You must credit any other artists in your credit roll.

YOUR FILM MUST BE NEW AS OF THE START DATE. You cannot use video shot before the start date of the challenge. You may not submit a film that you shot previously. Some exceptions may be made for royalty free stock footage on a case by case basis. Royalty free music is excluded from this rule.

Photo montages and animation (including stop-motion) are not acceptable as submissions. Films may include photo montages and animation in limited quantity if it is critical to the story.

Visual effects of all types are allowed.

You retain 100% ownership of your film, and are 100% responsible for its content. The DV Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12954943276472229197noreply@blogger.com
